Frequently Asked Questions
Simply put, to save money. You will always save more by using any energy you generate rather than selling it. Having battery storage means you can use any power your solar panels generate after the sun goes down.
Years ago the answer to this would have been 'That depends how big your solar system is' but these days we'd say, get all you can! You can fill your battery using free power from the sun, or with cheap power from your supplier during off-peak hours.
We would always suggest you follow the manufacturer's guidelines on maintenance for individual installs. That said, solar batteries have no moving parts, come with a 5 -- 10 year warranty and need very little looking after. Your inverter app will help maintain your battery and keep it in good condition. More and more batteries are coming with their own apps too.
Solar batteries need to be close to your inverter so anywhere you can fit them both is the answer. The norm used to be a storage cupboard or your loft. Regulation is discouraging loft installations in the future though. Most modern solar batteries are IP66 rated, meaning they are weatherproof and can be stored outside.
This depends on the system you have, but most inverters allow you to add more than one battery. Not all inverters are compatible with all batteries, so make sure you choose the right kind of inverter if you wish to add batteries in the future.
As solar batteries aren't connected directly to the panels, the simple answer is yes! The inverter is the main controller in a solar system, and that is what the battery needs to be compatible with. Any solar panel will work with your inverter.
This really depends on what you buy, but most solar batteries come with a 5 - 15 year warranty, so you can expect that long out of them. When buying a battery always check the 'cycles'. A cycle is when a battery fully charges and discharges. The average solar battery has 6000 cycles, which is about 2 cycles every day for ten years.
You sure can! The grid produces more energy than we can use at certain times of the day. So, that energy needs to be stored somewhere. Energy companies are happy to sell that energy to customers at a reduced rate and buy it back when the demand is higher. SEGs, or Smart Export Guarantees, are used to facilitate this -- whether you have solar or not.
